Your travel hat may come in all shapes and sizes. Knowing what kind looks best on you takes talent and experience. I discovered all that when I stepped into San Diego’s Village Hat Shop.
If you’d like to share the discovery of your perfect hat. Join a small group of fellow travelers for lunch and a tour of one of the foremost hat emporiums in the United States. The tour and lunch is Sat., July 5th at 11:30 when we meet at the Au Revoir Restaurant in San Diego. Reserve your seat.
More than a fashion statement
No matter what time of year, it’s prudent to wear hats outdoors – For protection to keep the sun off your face or for warmth in colder months or climes. According to the Skin Cancer Foundation, sun safety is being embraced by hat makers as well who are including styles that have wide enough brims to offer protection to the face, ears and neck.
“…Exposure to the sun’s ultraviolet radiation (UVR) increases the risk of all skin cancers, and broad-brimmed hats provide significant sun protection for the head and neck. As it turns out, shielding these vulnerable areas is especially important,” according to information from the Skin Cancer Foundation. Travel hats are a necessity and where to find the right one for you can be a challenge.
Knowing what hat to wear is also a big question. You may not be a ‘fashionista’ or long to look like Indiana Jones, but choosing a hat for an event, season or purpose is an art in itself.
That’s one reason walking through the expanse of the Village Hat Shop in San Diego’s Hillcrest neighborhood is such a treat. The place is packed with hundreds of choices. One tall, display case full of ethnic head dresses is just inside the front door and might give the impression that you’ve stepped into a museum, but beyond is filled with current chapeaus and historical re-imaginings full of style, whimsy and high fashion for men, women and children. Your travel hat and one for everyone in the family lies somewhere in the recesses of there as well.

The brim of a giant bowler hat shades the street entry to the Village Hat Shop. It’s a nod to decades dedicated to offering the finest in head wear. Fancy a ‘Fascinator’ that Princess Kate would envy? There are shelves of bejeweled Arturo Rios’ designs with towering tropical feathers. Slip into a Stetson, a newsboy ‘Ivy’ cap or the cool Kangol designs that the actor Samuel Jackson has made famous. Dr. Seuss would approve of the shelves crammed with costume and knit caps rich in color and pattern. One corner caters to Steam Punk style, another to historic recreations from the 20’s and 30’s.
The science behind which styles best flatter every face has been absorbed by the shop assistants and there’s a deep and informative website proving the passion founder Fred Belinsky has poured into the business since the 1990’s. Don’t miss the retro recommendations on the Art of Fitting Faces.
Hollywood films, musicals and fashion shows call the Village Hat Shop often, looking to complete outfits that flatter on film, the street and for every occasion. Whether you’re looking for something special, just like to window shop or need a travel hat, I hope you make time to explore the Village Hat Shop.
